Privacy and Security Stack
We’ve built privacy and security into our ecosystem
Compliance
HIPAA Compliant, and SOC 2 Aligned.
Encryption
Encryption in transit via HTTPS (TLS 1.2+); selective encryption applied to sensitive data at rest.
Data Residency
On-prem processing; cloud storage is optional and policy-controlled.
Governance
Supports SSO (SAML/OAuth), role-based access (RBAC), and audit-ready logging.
AI Inference
On-device processing via Apple Silicon (M-series); no external LLM data leakage.
Our commitments
Our commitments to protecting intellectual property
You retain ownership
All lectures, materials, and recordings remain the intellectual property of faculty or your institution. Habitat Learn does not claim ownership or usage rights over your content.
Privacy-first by design
Recordings are securely stored and only accessible to approved users. They are never shared beyond their intended institutional and educational use.
We act on your behalf
We operate as a data processor, not a data owner. Handling data strictly under the direction of your institution and in line with established privacy standards.
You stay in control
Recordings can be deleted at any time upon request. Administrators will soon have the ability to manage and delete recordings directly within the platform.
AI that respects your data
We follow a zero-retention approach, meaning your content is not stored or reused by AI systems. AI features are designed solely to support access and enhance the learning experience.
Transparent at every step
We’re open about how data is handled across the platform—from collection to storage to access. You’ll always know what’s happening, who has access, and why.

How are recordings used?
Recordings are only used for accessibility purposes; such as note-taking, transcription, or live captions—for approved students. They are not shared or used for any other purpose.
Who has access to recordings?
Only the assigned student can access the recordings. Institutional administrators may review (not download) recordings used for note-taking solely to verify accuracy and quality. When applicable, a professional note taker may also access the recording, but only for the duration of the note-taking task. Institutional administrators have the ability to manage permissions as needed.
Can recordings be deleted?
Yes. Faculty or administrators can request deletion at any time. Upcoming updates will allow administrators to manage and delete recordings directly within the platform.
Are recordings ever used to train AI models?
No. Messenger Pigeon follows a zero-retention AI approach. Recordings are never used to train or improve AI models. AI features exist solely to support accessibility and enhance the learning experience.
How is my data protected?
We use encryption at rest and in transit, with access restricted to authorized personnel under confidentiality agreements. Our systems meet HIPAA and regional data protection standards.
Does any lecture data leave the classroom or institution?
By default, no. The Podium Solution processes audio, video, captions, and transcripts directly on the podium device. Institutions can choose if anything leaves the device, with options ranging from fully on-prem (Podium Local) to encrypted relay or cloud storage.
Is student or institutional data used to train AI models?
No. Data is never used to train AI models. All AI processing runs locally or within institution-controlled environments, and prompts or outputs are not retained for training.
Can we control where data is stored and how long it’s kept?
Yes. Institutions define their own data policies, including where data is stored (on-prem, country-specific, or cloud) and how long it’s retained. You can set automatic deletion rules, disable storage entirely, or manage content manually.
How is data secured during processing and transfer?
Data is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2+. Sensitive data may also be encrypted at rest where appropriate. Because most processing happens on-device, lecture data typically doesn’t leave the podium unless your institution explicitly enables cloud storage.
What happens if the internet connection fails?
Core functionality continues to run on-device. Captions, transcripts, and study tools still work during lectures, and any optional syncing happens later once a connection is restored.
Who controls access to recordings and lecture content?
Faculty and the institution remain in control. Instructors initiate recordings and define access policies, including limiting access to attending students only or restricting distribution entirely.
